Using Orthobiologics and Sports Medicine to Treat Common Injuries
Are you dealing with arthritis pain, sports injuries, chronic tendon pain, frozen shoulder, or calcific tendonitis? See the treatment options for common conditions and injuries.
Treatable Conditions
In the past, many tendon, ligament, and arthritis diagnoses led to invasive surgeries with long recovery times. To get athletes back on the field and everyone else back on their feet, I've continued to train in advanced, minimally invasive options.
Orthobiologics is an alternative treatment for those wanting to avoid the potential adverse effects of steroid injections and those looking for a surgical alternative.
Sports medicine care for sprains, strains, and fractures and for those looking for Orthobiologics for chronic tendon pain, tennis elbow, Achilles Tendonitis, or elbow UCL injury.
Tenotomy is a minimally invasive nonsurgical treatment for hip bursitis, tennis elbow, shoulder tendonitis, and other tendon pain. Explore orthobiologic options like PRP, bone marrow, and adipose grafts.
High-volume injections performed in the office provide more rapid improvement in pain and motion than therapy alone while avoiding the anesthesia used with traditional frozen shoulder manipulation.
New Approaches to Common Problems
Relieve Your Arthritis Pain
Conventional non-surgical interventions for osteoarthritis include medications (Tylenol and NSAIDS), steroid injections, and hyaluronic acid injections. Repeating steroid injections frequently ends up as the foundation of pain control. Unfortunately, repeated steroid injections accelerate the progression of arthritis. This temporary pain relief is often followed by joint replacement surgery when steroids and gel injections no longer help. Dr. Miars provides these conventional treatments and also offers OrthoBiologic treatment options. OrthoBiologics may be a better option for you—especially if you have arthritis onset at a young age or if steroid injections are no longer working and you want to try and avoid joint replacement surgery.
RELIEVE YOUR ARTHRITIS PAIN
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), bone marrow aspirate (BMA), and adipose grafts are treatment options less invasive than joint replacement surgery. Dr. Miars participates in a patient outcomes tracking system with these procedures to contribute to medical knowledge and improve medical care.
Sports Medicine for Collegiate Athletes and Weekend Warriors
Whether your injury was on the field or on the pavement, or in your backyard, there are less invasive options to get you back to doing what you love. Dr. Miars has treated athletes for over twenty years, returning them to competition quickly and safely. Trust your recovery to someone with decades of experience.
ELBOW UCL SPRAINS
Explore alternatives to traditional Tommy John surgery. PRP injection has been shown to be less invasive, with a shorter recovery time, with a quicker return to throwing.
COMMON SPORTS INJURIES
How many other Waco-area physicians have multiple decades of experience working with high school and college athletes, runners, cyclists, cross-fitters, pickleball players, and swimmers? Let’s get you back to the activities you love.
Effective, Non-Surgical Alternatives for Chronic Tendon Pain
Traditional anti-inflammatory treatments do not work because chronic tendon pain is not caused by inflammation. Research shows the actual cause of tendon pain is different than initially thought. Tendon pain is related to an error in the body's healing response, resulting in the development of scar tissue within the tendon. This causes pain and prevents effective tendon healing. The new era of treatments is nonsurgical and less invasive. It includes minimally invasive treatment options that stimulate your body to replace damaged scar tissue with strong, healthy tendon. If you have not improved with NSAIDs and physical therapy treatments, these options have a ~80% success rate.
ORTHOBIOLOGICS OPTIONS
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) addresses the actual pathology of chronic tendon pain. Dr. Miars participates in a patient outcomes tracking system with these procedures to contribute to medical knowledge and improve medical care.
TENEX HEALTH TX® SYSTEM
Avoid general anesthesia. Ultrasound-guided tenotomy utilizing the Tenex device is a minimally invasive technique to treat chronic tendon and plantar fascia disease at its source. A tenotomy performed with a Tenex device removes the painful scar tissue and stimulates the body to build healthy tendon tissue. Tenex is also an option with a previous failed surgery.
New Techniques for Frozen Shoulder
Traditional treatment for a frozen shoulder is painful and takes several months of follow-up visits. Past recommended treatment for frozen shoulder consisted of steroid injections and physical therapy with manipulation, under anesthesia, for resistant cases. My practice utilizes a more effective in-office procedure.
HIGH VOLUME INJECTIONS
High-volume injections with a short course of physical therapy provide dramatically faster improvement than traditional steroid injections. This option is critical if you're looking to avoid general anesthesia or are looking for quicker pain relief.
Quicker Pain Relief for Calcific Tendonitis
Repetitive movement injury can happen to anyone, and with all the lifting, driving, and activities we enjoy, shoulders can become a source of pain. Calcific tendonitis is diagnosed when calcium deposits have formed on the soft tissue of the rotator cuff. Traditional treatment involves invasive surgery or using NSAIDs to deal with chronic pain. You have other options.
CALCIFIC DEBRIDEMENT WITH THE TENEX
We remove calcification in the area with a small, less than 1/4” incision. This results in rapid pain relief and a quicker return to normal activities.
“Phenomenal difference. I can walk straight. I was in the pool cleaning it today for almost 2 hours. I got out and still walked without pain. GOOD VISIT!”
